Bus Evacuation Drill Requirements
This policy outlines the requirements for bus evacuation drills to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Legal Mandates (NJAC 6A:27-11.2)
- Drills shall be conducted in accordance with all state and federal laws.
- Frequency (Transported Students): There shall be at least two drills per school year for all students transported to and from school.
- Frequency (Non-Transported Students): Students not regularly transported shall receive evacuation instruction and/or drill participation at least once per year.
Drill Component Requirements
Bus evacuation drills shall:
- Practice Scenarios: Demonstrate and practice various evacuation methods and components, including the use of front, rear, and side emergency exits.
- Personnel Participation: Include the participation of educational staff, the bus driver, and students in all appropriate portions of the drill.
- Timing: Be conducted under weather conditions conducive to student safety, ideally coinciding with a scheduled bus arrival at the school with students onboard.
