Vehicle Safety and Compliance
- Visibility: The front windshield must be clear of any obstructions. Remove all papers, tissue boxes, clothing, and other debris from the dashboard and windshield area.
- Out-of-Service Status: A bus shall be considered “Out of Service” if the crossing arm, stop arm, or any other essential safety device is non-functional.
- Idling Limit: Never idle for more than three minutes. (NJAC 7:27-14.15)
Vehicle Maintenance and Cleanliness
- Daily Maintenance: Each driver is responsible for sweeping their assigned vehicle, emptying the trash daily, and ensuring all seat belts are securely placed in an accessible position (as required by code). This requirement applies even if assigned a spare bus.
- Special Cleaning: Headlights and windows shall receive extra cleaning when road conditions necessitate improved visibility.
Engine Operation (IMPORTANT)
- Glow Plug Use: Glow Plugs must be used in all diesel buses prior to starting the vehicle. To prevent engine damage, turn the key to the “on” position and wait until the “wait to start” light or other glow plug indicator light has gone out before turning the key to start the vehicle. This procedure is mandatory regardless of season, temperature, or how recently the vehicle was running.
Parking and Documentation
- All district vehicles should be parked in their assigned parking spot at all times.
- Upon return to the transportation office/garage, Drivers must immediately return the key and gas fob to the key panel.
- Use of any school vehicle for personal use is strictly prohibited.
