Many over-the-counter drugs and prescription drugs have potential side effects that may impair a driver and place them and the students they transport at risk. It is essential that you review any medications you take with your physician to ensure you are able to safely drive your bus. To minimize the dangers of using medications, employees should:

  • Consultation & Alternatives: Ask their doctor or pharmacist how the medication might affect their ability to drive safely, and ask your health professional for non-impairing alternatives.
  • Reporting: If your physician advises that a medication temporarily impairs your ability to drive safely, you must immediately report this to your supervisor.
  • Following Instructions: Read the labels of any medication or supplement and follow instructions exactly.
  • Avoid Mixing: Never mix medications (including herbal supplements) without first checking with your health professional.
  • Strict Prohibitions: Never mix alcohol with any medications, and never take medications that have been prescribed to other people.
